Spatial Goes Mobile

Spatial, the seemingly ubiquitous collaboration site which allows as many as two dozen users to collaborate in the same shared virtual environment, today added mobile devices to the list of devices that can share in a simulation with PCs, the HoloLens, Magic Leap, and VR headset, creating the first truly cross platform XR solution. The company was just named Inc.’s “Up and Coming” tech company. “Conference calls are terrible,” the headline read, “Spatial is replacing them with Holographic meetings.”

Spatial has added key features to enhance its mobile interface. These include automatic camera switching to allow mobile users to easily see who is talking on a smaller screen. A full set of intuitive mobile-centric UI allows your avatar to move and interact with models, documents, or videos in 3D, allowing us to mix the virtual and real worlds with our mobile devices.

Use of Spatial and other immersive collaboration platforms has skyrocketed this year. Spatial says usage is up more than 130X and over half a million meetings joined since the start of the year. “This is a huge step for spatial computing and for us in solidifying our leadership as the leading AR/VR collaboration tool on the market today,” said Anand Agarawala, Co-founder and CEO of Spatial. “Previously only people with a headset could experience the true magic of Spatial but we wanted anyone to be able to take advantage of it. Now, you simply hold up your phone and for the first time ever can become an active part of any virtual meeting and see life-like avatars of coworkers or friends right in your living room.”

Spatial’s system uses a proprietary AI algorithm to automatically create fully dimensional, recognizable avatars for each participant from a simple 2D photo. Users can share web pages, media content, 3D objects, and write on whiteboards as if they were all present in the same room. Their first customers include Mattel, Purina/Nestle, and BNP Paribas.

Remote work is far from the only compelling use case. Spatial also allows users to share media, so a family throughout the world, on different devices could play a game, or watch a big one. Or simply play with their grandchildren in unexpected new ways. Think of it as Facetime in 3D with a much, much better form factor, and cross-platform. Lee says that “We are moving from the era of personal computing to collective computing where people can share their space and ideas from anywhere, on any device.”

Since its launch two years ago, Spatial has raised $22M from iNovia Capital, Expa (founded by Garrett Camp), Lerer Hippeau, Leaders Fund, Samsung NEXT, White Star Capital, iNovia and Kakao Ventures, and Andy Hertzfeld (Co-Inventor of the Macintosh), Instagram founder Mike Krieger and Zynga founder Mark Pincus.
